Clogged dishwashers
A dishwasher that leaves gray water in the bottom is usually reporting a kitchen drain problem, not an appliance fault. There is an easy way to check.
The dishwasher discharges into the sink drain or the disposal, so when that line is restricted the machine cannot push its water out and it stays in the tub. The appliance is working perfectly and the drain it relies on is not, which is why an appliance repair visit is so often a wasted trip.
The other frequent culprit is the air gap on the countertop, or the high loop in the drain hose. Both exist to stop dirty sink water siphoning back into the machine, and when the air gap clogs, water backs up and often spurts out of that little chrome cap.

- Fill the sink, let it drain, and watch the dishwasher
- Dirty sink water appearing in it means a drain problem
- Water spurting from the countertop cap means the air gap
- Run the disposal and watch: backup means the shared line

Save yourself an appliance call

Do I need a plumber or an appliance repair company?
Do the sink test. If sink water enters the dishwasher, or the machine drains fine once the sink is clear, it is a drain problem and an appliance technician cannot help you.
What is the air gap on my counter for?
It prevents contaminated sink water siphoning back into the dishwasher. When it clogs, drainage backs up and water often spurts from the cap. It is a two-minute clean and a very common cause of this exact complaint.
