Small clog, large volume

Clogged washing machine drains

A washing machine pumps thirty gallons out in about ninety seconds. A line that copes fine between loads can be completely overwhelmed by that.

Lint, detergent residue and fabric softener build a felt-like layer inside the standpipe and the branch line behind it. Between loads it drains perfectly well, so nothing looks wrong. During the pump-out the machine pushes far more water than the restricted pipe can accept, and it comes back up over the top of the standpipe.

This is urgent out of proportion to how bad the clog is, because the failure happens fast, unattended, and usually next to flooring and drywall that does not forgive water.

Warning signs

  • Water climbing the standpipe during the drain cycle
  • Damp baseboards or flooring you cannot account for
  • A stain on the ceiling below an upstairs laundry
  • Another fixture gurgling as the washer drains
  • A smell from the standpipe between loads

Do not do this

  • Run one more load to see if it clears itself
  • Push the drain hose deeper to stop the splashing
  • Pour opener into a standpipe, which comes back at you
  • Leave the house with a cycle running

If another fixture reacts, it is not the laundry

When the washer drains and a toilet bubbles or a floor drain surfaces, the machine is momentarily overloading a main line that has lost capacity. The washer is not the problem, it is the test that exposed one.

Straight answers

Questions about clogged washing machines

Why does my washer overflow only sometimes?

Because it depends on load size and cycle. A large load on a fast spin discharges more water more quickly than a small one, so a marginal line copes with some cycles and fails on others. Marginal always becomes blocked eventually.

Does fabric softener really cause this?

It contributes significantly. Liquid softener leaves a waxy residue that binds lint into the felt-like layer we pull out of these lines. Cutting back on it noticeably slows how fast the standpipe reloads after a cleaning.
